Winter Coat Guide

IMG_2064.JPG

We might not be quite ready to hear this yet, but Halloween has come and gone and the days are definitely getting shorter and colder. What does this mean? It means winter is just around the corner, [insert crying emoji here.] I’m sorry for saying the “W” word but time to face facts girlfriend, but don’t worry, I am here to help! If you are anything like me being warm is essentially the only thing that matters during the cold months of the year (which can drag on for way too long here in Canada). Since we likely won’t be making any tropical escapes this winter with Covid - honestly I am devastated - having a great winter coat is going to be key. Here is what I look for in a coat and what I find most important for staying toasty during those cold doggy walking days of winter.

P.S. Winter coats can actually be cute even if they are giant and puffy, which can help a little with the winter blues too . . . right?

First up I have made the switch from down jackets. Hear me out, and you animal lovers will understand how important this is. Down jackets are often made in such a way that the birds are tortured for their feathers, like I mean torture, tortured. It is absolutely horrific what they do (please feel free to educate yourself but I am not going into any many details here. I have bawled my eyes out before regarding this specific matter, take my word for it.) A big brand company we used to stock at the shop got caught for being incredibly inhumane in their practices and right there I knew I would never wear down again. ANYWAYS, the reason for this rant is the available technology regarding the filling for winter coats now is amazing, comparable and even warmer than down in most cases. The winter jackets I have invested in now are all good for -30, even -40, degree weather. Like dude, these things are WARM! And best of all none of them are down filled. I will link at the end some alternative companies that really do an amazing job with, not just the fashion elements, but warmth too!

There are many jackets I own and LOVE that are above the booty. I mean my jacket collection is quite extensive and I take it very seriously. HOWEVER, nothing is more important in a winter jacket, to me, than length (I mean besides the fact that it is actually warm HA). It has to cover your bum if you are using it for outdoor activities/ dog walking/ chasing after your toddler, etc. Like truly there is no other option. Unless you are wearing your boarding jacket that you wear strictly with snow pants but, that is a whole different story. The coat cannot be above your booty. It is that simple, your buns will thank me.

Little details can matter too, and make a big difference. Often I like to check that the hood is detachable (I don’t know why, I never detach it, but someone else might . . .). Thumb holes so if you put your gloves on and they happen to get snow in them the rest of our arms don’t get wet and cold. I know, I know, I am so smart. But for real those little style details are important and can matter when you are investing in something you will wear every day of an entire season (the longest season to ever exist I might add). Also, if you are wanting your bulky winter jacket to look “less” bulky pay attention to the lines of the jacket. Often jackets can synch in at the waist, or have the illusion of that which can really help! My jacket for example doesn’t synch but the lines of the pockets and the colour blocking give it sleeker silhouette (it is the warmest jacket I have ever owned).

Hopefully this little post helped you get into the winter coat wearing spirit. Trust me I am on team “winter sucks” and I am already dreading the months to come. BUT at least we can all be warm inside our giant coats and miserable on our winter staycations together now . . . right? Tell me on the gram, are you winter lovers or haters? Stay toasty babes!
